In
order to locate people in emergency situations and to facilitate
rural postal delivery, every residence, outbuilding on request and
place of business in Pepin County has been assigned a county address.
This address is made up of two components - an address number with
preceding letter designating direction (W for West addresses, and
N for North addresses) and a road name. The assigned address will
provide the information necessary for emergency response agencies,
delivery companies and rural postal services to locate appropriate
structures requiring these services.
The
address is a three to five digit number based on a grid of 400 numbers
per mile. An east/west road will be numbered using the numbers on
the east/west grid of 0 - 12,800. The east/west grid lines start
at the eastern border of the county in the Town of Albany at 0.
A road that runs predominately east and west will be given a fire
number that is preceded by the letter W. A north/south road will
be numbered using the numbers along the north/south grid of 400
to 7600. The north/south grid lines start in the southern portion
of the county in the Town of Pepin at 400. A road that runs predominately
north and south will be given a fire number that is preceded by
the letter N. Even numbers are on the north and east sides of a
road; odd numbers are on the south and west sides of a road.
East/west roads have fire numbers that get larger as you travel
west.
North/south roads have fire numbers that get larger as you travel
north. Roads which change direction for less than ½ of a
mile retain the original direction and roads that change direction
for greater than ½ mile will change to that direction.
It should also be noted that it is possible to have a duplication
in the letter and number within the county (N5906), but not when
the full address is used (N5906 Rustad Ln).
