Position Objectives:
The job duties for this position involve a variety of makes and models of trucks and highway equipment. This position is responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining highway equipment and vehicles. This position will also fabricate, weld and repair equipment. This position operates under the direction of the Highway Operations Manager and is required to provide their own basic tools. Tool allowance and shop clothing are provided.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The employee in this class performs difficult and skilled mechanical work on gasoline and diesel operated trucks, tractors, and related equipment. The employee is expected to recognize and correct problems on all types of machinery.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Diagnoses defects of trucks and other specialized equipment;
- Repairs or overhauls brake systems, differentials and front and rear axles;
- Repairs engines and performs tune-ups on gasoline and diesel operated equipment;
- Repairs and maintains loaders, tractors, trucks and road graders;
- Inspects, adjusts and replaces plows, mowers and other auxiliary equipment;
- Maintains and repair a variety of small engines, lawn mowers and pumps;
- Repairs generators, alternators, carburetors and transmissions;
- Welds and Brazes broken equipment as required;
- Keeps tools and garage in order;
- Diagnose, repair and maintain all highway equipment;
- Welding and fabricating as needed;
- Assist in building maintenance;
- Fill in for Highway Maintenance workers as needed;
- Maintain shop facility and shop tools;
- Any other work as directed by Operations Manager or Highway Commissioner.
- Must be available for call in for winter snow and ice removal and other emergency and non-emergency situations.
Minimum Requirements:
Thorough knowledge of motor vehicle and other equipment mechanics and skill in repairing such vehicles
Knowledge in hydraulic applications
Completion of a standard high school course supplemented by vocational technical training in automotive mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
Must be able to obtain a valid Wisconsin Class A, B, C Commercial Driver’s License, and “N” tank endorsed
Must have own tools
Desirable Training and Experience:
Considerable experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment
Secondary degree with technical training in automotive mechanics
